First episode, here we go! This week on Channel 7’s Instant hotel we visited the ‘Dug Out’ – an underground house located in Coober Pedy, South Australia.
Razz and Mark’s Doug Out on Instant Hotel set us back $420 a night. The underground accommodation was unique in that the hotel was underground and the interior was like nothing we have seen before.
We met the 3 other couples on this episode who were:
– Jay & Leah from Portsea, Victoria.
Razz & Mark from Coober Pedy, South Australia.
Debbie & Justin from Buddina, Queensland.
And then there is us, Gene & Sharon from Bellender Ker, Queensland. We were excited to compare the underground dug out to our Instant Hotel, The Misty Mountains Homestead.
When we arrived you could say, “I might have been a bit over dressed” as we didn’t know where we were going!
From here we were tasked with rating the other contestants in the competition categories which were:
- Home
- Location and attractions
- Nights sleep
- Value for money
And the best part was we found out there was a $100,000 prize! Now the real competition was going to start…
After mining for worthless opal (we’re not miners) and seeing what Coober Pedy had to offer we all had to submit our reviews of the Instant Hotel.

Juliet Ashworth: 7/10 – “The furnishing is letting it down – it needs to be more Australian-a.”
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen: 8/10 – “It feels like an abandoned mine, like the Flintstones.”

Total score: 32/50
Some other comments throughout the episode were: “Quality is okay for the bedroom, the kitchen is dated but very well organised. Master bedroom is nice with a big gothic curve.”
Gene said, “It was a dust pit but there was a certain uniqueness to the location, however you have to consider it is expensive to get to a remote location too”
I thought it was a once in a life time experience, it’s not like anything we have ever seen before.
However, the flies were intense and really impacted the experience, if they could find a fix for the flies then this would have been an even better experience.
Overall the score of 32/50 was a bit high we thought, a bit like the temperature.
